Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Australian GST rate?
A flat 10% nationwide. Unlike Canada (which mixes federal GST + state HST/PST/QST), Australia has a single national rate. Introduced 1 July 2000, the rate has never changed.
How do I add GST to a pre-tax amount?
Multiply by 1.10. A $100 pre-tax item becomes $110 with GST. The GST component is $10. Use the "Add GST" mode above.
How do I extract GST from a GST-inclusive total?
Divide by 1.10. A $110 inclusive total has $100 base + $10 GST. Or: multiply the inclusive total by 1/11 to get the GST component. Use the "Remove GST" mode above.
What's GST-free vs input-taxed?
GST-free: basic food (fresh produce, milk, bread — NOT prepared/restaurant food), healthcare, education, childcare, exports. No GST charged. Input-taxed: residential rent, financial services, precious metals. Also no GST charged to the customer, but the business can't claim input tax credits on related expenses.
Do I have to register for GST?
Yes if your business has annual GST turnover of $75,000 or more ($150,000 for non-profits, $0 for taxi/rideshare drivers). Under that threshold, registration is voluntary. Registered businesses must charge GST, file BAS (Business Activity Statement) quarterly or monthly, and can claim input tax credits.
What about GST on imported goods?
Since 1 July 2018, GST applies to most low-value imported goods ($1,000 or less) sold to Australian consumers. Online stores selling into Australia generally must register and charge GST on these sales.
