How GST/HST works

The federal Goods and Services Tax is a value-added tax (VAT) collected at every stage of production but credited back to businesses through Input Tax Credits (ITCs). The end consumer ultimately pays the full tax. Most businesses with revenue over $30,000/year must register and collect GST/HST.

In HST provinces, the provincial portion is combined into the same tax, simplifying administration. In GST+PST provinces, businesses collect two separate taxes. Quebec's QST is structured similarly to GST (value-added) but is administered by Revenu Québec.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between GST, HST, PST, and QST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the federal 5% sales tax. HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines GST with the provincial sales tax into a single rate — used by Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and PEI. PST (Provincial Sales Tax) is collected separately from GST in BC, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. QST (Quebec Sales Tax) is Quebec's version, at 9.975%. Alberta and the three territories charge only federal GST.
What are the current Canadian sales tax rates?
Combined rates as of 2026: AB / NT / NU / YT: 5% (GST only). SK: 11% (5% GST + 6% PST). BC / MB: 12% (5% GST + 7% PST). ON: 13% (HST). NS: 14% (HST — reduced from 15% in April 2025). NB / NL / PE: 15% (HST). QC: 14.975% (5% GST + 9.975% QST).
How does HST differ from GST + PST?
Practically, HST and GST+PST look similar to consumers — both add a combined rate to the price. The difference is administrative: HST is collected as a single tax and remitted to the federal government, which then distributes the provincial portion to the province. GST+PST require two separate tax systems. Most businesses prefer HST because it's simpler.
How do I remove tax from a tax-inclusive price?
Use the "Remove tax" mode. Enter the gross (tax-inclusive) amount and pick the province; the calculator divides by (1 + total rate) to extract the base. Example: $113 in Ontario ÷ 1.13 = $100 base, with $13 HST. This is essential for businesses reverse-calculating tax on receipts.
Is GST/HST charged on everything?
No. Several categories are zero-rated (0% — basic groceries, prescription drugs, most medical devices) or tax-exempt (no GST charged but no input tax credits for the seller — most healthcare services, daycare, financial services, residential rent). The "5%" / "13%" rates apply to standard taxable supplies.
When did Nova Scotia change its HST rate?
Nova Scotia reduced its HST from 15% to 14% effective April 1, 2025. The provincial portion dropped from 10% to 9%. This calculator reflects the post-April 2025 rate.
Are GST/HST credits available to individuals?
Yes. The CRA pays a quarterly GST/HST credit to low and modest-income individuals and families — automatic if you file a tax return. The credit doesn't change the sales tax rate you pay at the till; it's a separate cash payment.
