Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NZ GST rate?
A flat 15% nationwide. Raised from 12.5% on 1 October 2010; stable since.
How do I add GST to a pre-tax price?
Multiply by 1.15. A $100 pre-tax item becomes $115 with GST. Use the "Add GST" mode.
How do I remove GST from a tax-inclusive price?
Divide by 1.15. A $115 inclusive total has $100 base + $15 GST. Equivalently: multiply the inclusive total by 3/23 to get the GST component. Use "Remove GST" mode.
Do basic groceries have GST in NZ?
Yes — unlike Australia, NZ GST applies to almost everything, including basic groceries. There are very few zero-rated or exempt categories (mainly financial services and residential rent for landlords). This was a deliberate design choice when GST was introduced in 1986 to keep the system simple.
Do I need to register for GST?
Compulsory if your annual turnover (or projected turnover) exceeds $60,000. Voluntary below that. Registered businesses charge GST, file GST returns to IRD (monthly, two-monthly, or six-monthly), and claim input tax credits.
How is NZ GST different from Australian GST?
NZ GST is 15% with very few exemptions — a "broad-based" GST. Australian GST is 10% with basic food, healthcare, and education exempted. NZ's approach raises more revenue per percentage point but is more regressive at the till for low-income earners.
