What is GST?
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India.
It replaced a host of earlier taxes such as VAT, service tax and excise duty with a single unified system.
GST is charged at the point of consumption and is split between the central and state governments.
How to use this GST calculator
Choose a mode — “Add GST” to find the price including tax, or “Remove GST” to extract the base amount from a tax-inclusive price.
Enter the amount in rupees.
Pick the GST rate — tap a standard slab or type a custom rate.
Select supply type — intra-state shows the CGST + SGST split, inter-state shows IGST.
The results update instantly as you type — no “calculate” button needed.
GST calculation formula
Adding GST: GST amount = (Base × Rate) ÷ 100, and Total = Base + GST.
Removing GST: Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100), and GST = Total − Base.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate GST on an amount?
To add GST, multiply the base amount by the GST rate and divide by 100, e.g. GST on ₹1,000 at 18% = ₹180, so the total is ₹1,180. To remove GST from a price that already includes it, divide the gross amount by (1 + rate/100): ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base. Our calculator does both instantly.
What are the GST slabs in India?
India has five main GST rate slabs: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. A few items also attract special rates of 0.25% and 3% (e.g. rough diamonds and gold). Most goods and services fall under 5%, 12% or 18%.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
For intra-state sales (buyer and seller in the same state), GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state sales, a single IGST (Integrated GST) equal to the full GST rate is charged instead.
How do I remove GST from a total amount?
Switch the calculator to “Remove GST”, enter the GST-inclusive total, and select the rate. The tool reverse-calculates the base (taxable) value and the GST component. Formula: base = total ÷ (1 + rate/100).
Is this GST calculator free and accurate?
Yes. It is 100% free with no signup, and all calculations run privately in your browser. The maths follows standard Indian GST rules. For invoicing or filing, always cross-check with your accountant or the GST portal.
Is GST included in the MRP?
Yes. By law, the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) printed on a product is inclusive of all taxes, including GST. To find the GST already baked into an MRP, use the “Remove GST” mode above.
How do I calculate GST backwards from the final price?
Switch to “Remove GST”, enter the GST-inclusive price and the rate, and the calculator works backwards to show the base price and the GST component. Formula: base price = final price ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100).
